About Me
I am a publishing poet, writer, photographer, singer songwriter, website designer, and dancer. I have been a yogi and meditator for over 35 years. I am currently making my first guitar with the coaching of my husband, James Russell, who is a professional guitar maker and guitarist.

My poem, "Vigil," appears on the right sidebar of this group site. It has been published many times, in both print and online journals, since it was written in 1996, and I have read it at many readings. My love for Tibet and the Tibetan people and culture has been consciously with me this life since I first saw Kalu Rinpoche in Vancouver, BC, in early 1972, when he first came to the West. I have also written a poem about seeing him that first night; it is called, "Kalu." It, along with "Vigil," can be found on my poetry website at http://whiteowlweb.com. There are also poems on the site I wrote for Chenrezig and Nagarjuna.

My Tibet
I have had the privilege and fortune to see and receive teachings from Kalu Rinpoche, Lama Tsenjur, Tarthang Tulku, Dezhung Rinpoche, Chogyam Trungpa, Karmapa, the Dalai Lama, Lama Lodo, and Lama Wangdor Rinpoche. I also knew Ken McCloud when he was Kalu Rinpoche's translator, and I recently joined his group, Unfettered Mind, here in ning.com.

I was at Naropa Institute (University) the summer of 1974 when Naropa opened. I was on the editorial staff of "Loka" working with Rick Fields and Richard Green. At the end of the summer session, most of the staff went to the Rocky Mountain Dharma Center (as it was called then) and we were with Chogyam Trungpa on the porch of his trailer (there were no buildings there yet) when he painted the calligraphy for the first Loka cover.

My Tibetan name, which was given to me in 1972, is DrenKar. In a dream I had a few years ago, the name in English became "Starlight," a loose translation. I answer to quite a few names!

I traveled to India in 1972 with $40 in my pocket. I did not go north. I would like to go again and spend time in the north.

Keenness of intellect and unwavering faith are required to tune in with the mind of the spiritual preceptor.
Spiritual armour and strengh of intellect are required for the fullfilment of one`s heart`vows.

Dear Layne
you are blessed,
And honoured by having recived so many teachings by all Enlightened Lamas.

I recall the perfume of flowers forgotten
That infused my heart with fiery passion
Wafting aloft and all over
Mirrored in all intuition

Fear for myself no more echoed
As I soar high over abyss
Burning my fire I have not lost
For I have not misplaced your kiss

As I inhale the scent of flowers in bloom
Thoughts creative stay in motion
Compassionate universal
Kind in oceans of perception

And sunlight warms all directions
United in common continuum
We must nurture our creations
For we are here to love freedom

I find the Prayer Flags very symbolic and touching. Truly they contain the aspirations of those who made and put up the flags.

I am the Candle Flame

I am the candle flame for Tibet on high
My country stolen mountains in the sky
Valleys weep your clouds float on by
Freedom taken from me that’s why I cry
Oh mountain trails how I miss your track
My flame burns bright I want you back
Within my soul I yearn my eyes wet
Tibet you were my life ill not forget
Why did you come take my home away?
Even then you didn’t ask I had no say
You stole my heart my spirit all I had
Now here I burn my flame bright but sad
What did I do I ask the question why
For I grow weary to see my land for I die
Here I stand you smile look down on me
Ill fight for you till my death to set you free
So many years i've suffered silent in pain
How I yearn to touch your gentle soil again
To climb to yonder mountain peek above
Once more my spirit to feel of your love

Vigil

Where are you now,
with your palms together,
bowing,
your dark red robes
wrapping the wisdom
of a thousand years,
white knife peaks,
and over six thousand
monasteries?

Your home not your home
and yet your home always,
you wander,
you meditate,
you chant and pray;
you teach, you love,
or you stay
and must keep quiet.

Yet prayer flags still blow
in high Tibetan air,
prayer flags still blow
in the deep dark-eyed hearts
of your people.
There are places
the intruders,
the violators
cannot reach–
places alive with
the smiles and tears
of your lost land.

Red robed ones
with your calm eyes
upon the world,
you who pay homage
to the consciousness
in all things,
you who see far beyond
appearances:
you know past time,
you love past duality,
and yet you cry too.

The mountains of Tibet,
the vast plateaus and
green valleys,
the sky lakes and blue rivers,
the sons and daughters
of this sacred land
know and wait for you,
and for their time
within space and beyond
to be free.
