On Aug 7 & 8, Circle of Friends - Cebu and Tibet Support - Pilipinas joined the Candle4Tibet (8/7/08) and Concert4Tibet (8/8/08).
The concert was done primarily to spread awareness on Tibet's current situation under the illegal Chinese occupation and repression.
It was free of charge with over 30 local bands participating. No bands were paid and were informed of the concert's objectives. Slides and videos about Tibet were also shown. Thanks for the support given by the local government officials, as well as the local church pastoral community. The event was covered by the local TV network (ABS-CBN). The concert and recordings were done under the group's limited financial funding. Special thanks for those who have supported this project, especially in this part of the pacific where the Tibet issue is not that known. http://tsg-pilipinas

Salamat sa nice quotation previous posting) and the support from Lester. Thanks too from Bem2x for the greetings and solidarity.

Yes the concert was a complete success in terms of spreading Tibet awareness. People brought candles and were lighted during the concert. Messages, slides and videos were shown in between bands and here are some of the reactions; "I never knew that these things still exist today" | "First time I've heard about Tibet and it's too sad" | I'm glad I came to the concert besides the music, it was ncie to know about Tibet" | "wats da name of the country again?" | "China shoudl get out of Tibet, I think the Tibetans did not invite them in the first place".

The event was a big hit in the city, with the regional Reuters sending their local affiliate station (ABS-CBN) mobile crew to partially cover and do some interviews. People were invited to come a light a candle in front of the stage and with EBJ (emcee) stating that the candle is dedicated to all those who have greatly suffered in Tibet since the illegal Chinese invasion in the early 50's. And encouraging the audience to shout "Free Tibet!".

We are waiting for the pictures and maybe a video to post in here. Thanks for all the support. Jacinto, Jerry, Tatz, Eugene, Lester and the all those who helped set this near impossibloe task (that's considering our budget). Mabuhi ang Tibet Libre!

“A candle is a symbol of a peace, aspiration and prayer. Its light speaks more than a thousand words. It is hope in itself and a mighty weapon of peace. Let's keep this hope burning. For a Free Tibet and a peaceful world.” [LP]

Update/Press Release:

Cebu City Philippines, 8/7/08
Friends for Tibet-Cebu joined the candle4Tibet and to distribute fliers for the planned Aug 8th Concert for Tibet Awareness. The biggest project the group ever had since it was formed two years ago. More than 30 bands were to play for a cause on this free-of-charge concert where slides and videos and announcements about the Tibet issue will be done in between band sets. The project was pretty much accepted that even the regional Reuters had contact and to inform the group that it is sending it's local affiliate, the ABS-CBN TV network to cover the event. The concert was very successful in terms of spreading Tibet awareness, especially in these parts where the Tibet issue are rarely heard. Pictures and videos will be loaded at candle4tibet and youtube as soon as they are available. Also follow tsg-Pilipinas link below for partial postings, more to post once they get to me.

During the candle lighting on the 7th of Thursday, the group were suppose to light candles on two venues. The first was the concert site in Mambaling District, south of the City and at the Chinese Consular Office in midtown Cebu City. Earlier that evening the ABs-CBN crew had contacted the officer of the consular office about comments on the group's plan candle vigil and concert in regards to it's policy.
This triggered an alert (from whom?) and the whole block area of the Chinese consul was cordon off with two fire trucks and local police who they said were anticipating a demonstration. The group had to go back to the park venue since it was trying to avoid the confrontational mood at that moment.
The Circle of Friends were not sure if they were the intended party or another local leftist group that were also planning to stage mass action on the Chinese office due to it's human rights violation in Tibet and Burma. Jacinto Vidal, coordinator of Friends for Tibet later said, that why should the consul office be afraid of some twenty-plus people who were only armed with candles and with their strong convictions. The said they were only seeking to express their support for the people of Tibet and to join the peaceful worldwide action.

I am the Candle Flame

I am the candle flame for Tibet on high
My country stolen mountains in the sky
Valleys weep your clouds float on by
Freedom taken from me that’s why I cry
Oh mountain trails how I miss your track
My flame burns bright I want you back
Within my soul I yearn my eyes wet
Tibet you were my life ill not forget
Why did you come take my home away?
Even then you didn’t ask I had no say
You stole my heart my spirit all I had
Now here I burn my flame bright but sad
What did I do I ask the question why
For I grow weary to see my land for I die
Here I stand you smile look down on me
Ill fight for you till my death to set you free
So many years i've suffered silent in pain
How I yearn to touch your gentle soil again
To climb to yonder mountain peek above
Once more my spirit to feel of your love

Vigil

Where are you now,
with your palms together,
bowing,
your dark red robes
wrapping the wisdom
of a thousand years,
white knife peaks,
and over six thousand
monasteries?

Your home not your home
and yet your home always,
you wander,
you meditate,
you chant and pray;
you teach, you love,
or you stay
and must keep quiet.

Yet prayer flags still blow
in high Tibetan air,
prayer flags still blow
in the deep dark-eyed hearts
of your people.
There are places
the intruders,
the violators
cannot reach–
places alive with
the smiles and tears
of your lost land.

Red robed ones
with your calm eyes
upon the world,
you who pay homage
to the consciousness
in all things,
you who see far beyond
appearances:
you know past time,
you love past duality,
and yet you cry too.

The mountains of Tibet,
the vast plateaus and
green valleys,
the sky lakes and blue rivers,
the sons and daughters
of this sacred land
know and wait for you,
and for their time
within space and beyond
to be free.
